Welcome to Amite!

The Town of Amite City is a quiet town, with many picturesque lawns and gardens of azaleas and dogwoods.  It is a retreat for retirees escaping city life and for parents of young children who desire a small community.

The Town of Amite City lies at the intersection of I-55 and Hwy. 16, making it about halfway between New Orleans, LA and Jackson, MS.  It is the seat of Tangipahoa Parish and home to the Oyster Festival.

The Canadian National Railroad runs north and south through the community, parallel to Hwy. 51.

The scenic Tangipahoa River lies just to the east of the Town of Amite City and is a popular canoeing and tubing destination.  Just a few miles past the Tangipahoa River, visitors can stop at one of the numerous nurseries on the way to the Global Wildlife Center and Zemurray Gardens.  Rolling hills of dairy farmers and weekend retreats of city dwellers greet travelers to the east and west of the town.

The Springview Country Club features an 18-hole golf course, while the Florida Parishes Skeet & Gun Association is popular destination for wing shooters and hosts registered competitive shoots.

The Oyster Festival is held in March of each year and features family fun, with carnival rides, musical entertainment, and an opportunity to visit old friends and meet new ones.

The Tangipahoa Parish Fair is held each October, featuring booths, family-oriented activities, rides and a host of local food vendors.

Everyone needs a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  Amite offers an entertaining and relaxing environment.
