Ferrin Grace Hendry Day


Tangipahoa Parish native, FERRIN GRACE HENDRY, was honored by

Walmart Heart Program on Friday, March 22, 2024.


   Ferrin arrived at the ceremony in a Walmart truck and was made an honorary Walmart Truck Driver for the day. She received a truck driver shirt with her name as well as a Walmart vest and name badge, along with many gifts.

   Amite Mayor Walter Daniels III presented Ferrin with a key to the city, along with a copy of the proclamation declaring

March 22, 2024, as Ferrin Grace Hendry Day.

   Amite Police Chief Lendrick Francois presented her with a shirt and proclaimed her as a police officer for the day. Amite Fire Assistant Chief Jason King presented her with shirts and made her an Amite Firefighter as well. Following the ceremony, Ferrin enjoyed a ride in both an Amite firetruck and an Amite police unit.

   16-year-old Ferrin has exceeded all expectations that were declared when she was diagnosed as an infant with many medical issues that would continue to multiply and impact her life. She is the daughter of Justin and Dana Hendry and the granddaughter of Larry and Rhonda Hendry and Brenda and Ronnie Smith. She is the 7th of 8 children and loves her siblings, their spouses and her nieces and nephews.

Annual Black History Program Celebration


    The annual Celebrate Black History Program, sponsored by the Town of Amite City and the Amite Chamber of Commerce, was held on Friday, February 9 with over 70 people in attendance.

    Cemetery Administrator welcomed everyone, and Rev. Herman O. Kelly of Grant Chapel AME Church opened in prayer. Police Chief Lendrick Francois led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the national anthem sung by Angie Brown, granddaughter of Amite native US Army Staff Sgt Earnest Caesar Brown, who was killed in action in Vietnam. This year’s speaker was Linda Hart of the Amite Historical Association.

   Mayor Walter Daniels III and Chamber President Bridget Gaines Keyser made presentations to Grace Walker, Augustine Crier, and Alphonse Dillon, who were honored for their lifelong commitment to the Amite Community and for being an inspiration to others.

    Memorial presentations were made by City Clerk Jewel McCoy, Chamber President, and the Mayor, to the families of Emma McCoy Wilson and Melvin Finn.

    The program ended with the audience singing along as Angie Brown sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

    A special thanks to Master Chef, Town Donuts, Mary Lee Donuts, Cooper’s Bakery, and Britney Rumfalo. Thanks Luther Tolliver for capturing the event in photos.

    Amite is a part of history in the making- with the first black mayor, the first black chief of police, and the first black city clerk: Mayor Walter Daniels, Chief Lendrick Francois, and City Clerk Jewel McCoy.

Governor John Bel Edwards, shown center, was the guest speaker at the Wednesday, September 27, 2023, Amite Chamber of Commerce meeting. The Governor did a recap of his last eight years and happily stated “I’ll be home in three months!” Town of Amite City officials attending, shown from left are Chief of Police Lendrick Francois, Mayor Walter Daniels III, Governor, Executive Assistant to the Mayor Carol Brooke, Court Administrator Jewel McCoy, and Cemetery Administrator Cathy Potts. Others in attendance were City Manager Mark Kolwe, Assistant to the Mayor Vince LaBarbera, Councilperson Rose Sumrall, Assistant Police Chief Travis Graham, and Public Utilities Superintendent Tennis Rick.

Cleanup Day

Saturday, April 22, 2023


    This year, our annual cleanup day became a two-day event.

    Hood Memorial Hospital and Little School Daycare could not participate in the Saturday event, so they chose to clean on Thursday afternoon, April 20. Hood Hospital had 17 employees and the daycare had a total of 20 children and staff picking

up litter. These groups accumulated a total of 15 bags of litter along with collecting two discarded shopping carts.

    On Saturday, April 22, we had 51 volunteers participate in the cleanup day. Those participating included TPSO Young Marines, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Rivers Fresh Market, Oak Forest Academy BETA, Amite Chamber of Commerce, TPFD #1, B J Ginn Funeral & Cremation Services, Courage to Save CPR Training, Wags and Whiskers Dog Boarding, M & L House of Blessing Daycare, Town Councilman Mose Guzzardo, Mayor Walter Daniels, Vince LaBarbera, Sheila Addison, and several other residents of our town. A total of 60 bags were collected on Saturday, along with other large, discarded items including a shopping cart, grill, and car pieces.

    That is a total of 88 volunteers and 75 bags collected during this year’s Love the Boot Campaign.

Annual Black History Month Program


Approximately 75 area residents and officials gathered at Amite City Hall for the annual Black History Month Program sponsored by the Amite Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Amite City. Each year two local citizens are recognized and celebrated for their dedication and service to the Amite Community. This year's recipients of this honor were Irma Kelly and Luther Toliver. Congrats to both of these deserving individuals for their love of Amite!

Amite Chamber of Commerce Luncheon



First Lady Donna Edwards was the guest speaker at lunch on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at the Florida Parishes Arena Event Center. The Amite Chamber of Commerce sponsored this event. Mayor Walter Daniels III presented the First Lady with a gift containing all “Amite” items thanking her for her contributions to our state.

Memorial Day


On Saturday, May 21, over 40 volunteers gathered at Amite City Hall for the Raising of the Flag before proceeding to the five town cemeteries to place flags on the graves of over 500 Veterans for the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend.

Cathy Potts, Cemetery Administrator sends out a special thanks to the teams from TPSO Young Marines, Hood Memorial Hospital, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Amite Oyster Festival Board & Queens, along with Mary Lou Lee, Fernando Campos, Mark Kolwe, and her granddaughters Izzie, Avery and Emme Jones for helping honor the memory of our veterans.


Also, thanks to our local businesses for providing coffee, donuts, biscuits, drinks for the volunteers. These included: Master Chef, Cooper’s Bakery, Mike’s Catfish, Hood Automotive, and Winn Dixie.


And of course, none of this would have been possible without the generous donations from several Amite Rotarians for the purchase of the flags.

A Successful Cleanup Day

Saturday, April 23, 2022


The Town of Amite City held a "Love the Boot" Cleanup Day on Saturday, April 23. Thirty-nine volunteers worked to clean up the town, collecting over 50 bags of litter from along the streets and parks.


Mayor Walter Daniels and Cleanup Day Coordinator Cathy Potts extend a huge THANK YOU to Britney Rumfalo, Carol Brooke, Amite Chamber of Commerce, Sgt. Marvin Vernon and the TPSO Young Marines, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Hood Memorial Hospital, Councilman Mose Guzzardo, town employees Butch Gaston and Vince LaBarbera, Amite Fire Dept #1, and the other volunteers that joined in the efforts to clean up our town.



Veterans Day Preparation


Sgt. Marvin Vernon and the TPSO Young Marines; Mrs. Kari Wheeler and Oak Forest Academy Students Government Association and Beta Club students; April Hayden of Amite Chamber; and other volunteers spent the morning of Saturday, November 6th placing flags at the graves of veterans in the Amite Cemeteries in preparation for Veterans Day.


A special thanks to those individual Amite Rotarians for donating the funds to purchase the flags, enabling us to honor the memory of our veterans on all appropriate holidays.

Amite City Arts Council

Honored Four of its Citizens with Memorial Plaques

in the Downtown Coach Catha Park.

The plaques honored:  John Fulda, long time Amite High School Band Director; Carrie Pugh-Paul, Choir Director at Sumner High and Choral Director for several churches in the Amite area; Bruce Cutrer, who served 56 years as Amite Fire Chief; Devonta Smith, Heisman Trophy winner.

The plaques, funded by the Amite Arts Council, are located near the 9-11 Water Memorial Wall. In the fall, the Amite Arts Council will unveil a bronze Battlefield Cross to recognize Amite area veterans.
